THIRD POLE EXPEDITION
April - June 1999

The Expedition

For this 5th attempt, I have opted to climb the giant mountain via the North-East Ridge.

This route passed into legend as a result of the disappearance in 1924, just a few hundred metres from the summit, of the two renowned British climbers, George H. Mallory and Andrew C. Irvine and the subsequent controversy: were they, yes or no, the first men to get to the roof of the world?

Once again, I will accompanied by my Nepalese friend, Manaram Tamang, who has shared my Himalayan adventures for the past ten years or so. This time, we will attempting to reach the summit without using oxygen.
