The history of the Earth compressed into 365 days

Among the dozens of existing scenarios that explain man's place in the universe, we have selected the one revealed by the Belgian climate expert, André Berger, in his book "The Earth's Climate

If we compare the Earth's 4.5 billion years to the 365 days of a single year, this is what we find :

  • Beginning of March : appearance of the oldest sedimentary rocks
  • End of March : appearance of the first traces of life
  • Beginning of July: first ice age
  • 21 November : appearance of the first fish
  • 25 November : the first plants
  • 11 December : Pangaea (the original continent) starts to break up
  • 25 December : disappearance of the dinosaurs and beginning of the age of mammals at the same time as the formation of the Alps
  • 30 December, 9.00 am : birth of the Himalayas
  • 31 December, 6.00 pm : appearance of Lucy, the first hominid that stood erect. We gradually enter the Quaternary Ice Age period
  • 31 December, 11.56 pm : birth of Homo Sapiens (our direct ancestor)
  • 31 December, 11.58 pm : last advance of the ice caps
  • 31 December, 11.59 and 46 secs : beginning of the Christian era
  • 31 December, 11.59 and 53 secs : beginning of the Middle Ages
  • 31 December, 11.59 and 58.6 secs : French Revolution
  • 31 December, 11.59 and 59.3 secs: beginning of the 20th century
