Sleeping bags

These have been made for the expedition by the French manufacturer, Lestra-Sport (Amboise). Designed to be used at temperatures in the order of -40°C, they only weigh 2.6 kg each. The mattress, made from open-cell foam trapped in a watertight envelope (thermarest) is built into the bag and constitutes the lower part of it. The bag is covered with a single layer of synthetic fibre (Du Pont de Nemours, thermolite extreme, 80 g/m2). The upper part of the bag features top-quality goose down in 3 partitions. The fabric used is pertex (polyamide 66) weighing 28 g/m2. A large hood covers the whole bag and enables the face to be protected entirely, while breathing through a hole in the side. An internal flap prevents the air exhaled through the mouth during sleep from spreading through the bag, which naturally limits the water content inside the bag and so prevents the insulation from becoming wet and thus gradually losing its insulating capacities.
