The Great Antarctic Crossing
Sebastian Alvaro, Ramón Larramendi, Francisco Soria

Sebastien Alvaro, Ramón Larramendi and Francisco Soria are attempting to make the 2nd longest crossing of Antarctica (behind Jean-Louis Etienne's epic journey in 1989-90), leaving from the former Belgian King Baudouin base and heading for the French Dumont d'Urville base 5 000 km away.

A new method of travelling has been invented for their trek : a sledge 5 m long and 3 m wide, with their tent set up on it at all times.

The sledge, which weighs 600 kg, will be hauled by a giant traction sail. The team hopes to average 85 km a day and complete the journey in around sixty days.

This expedition was scheduled for the Antarctic summer season last year, but like a number of others, a lack of funding meant the project was unable to proceed. It is felt again this year that as no official announcement has been made on the website, the project may well have to be postponed once again. We will wait to hear any news...
