Il British expedition This is the final expedition to set out this spring from Ward Hunt (Canadian Far North). Dave Mill is attempting to become the first man to reach the geographic North Pole from Canada without outside assistance. The Norwegian explorer Borge Ousland also made it to the North Pole without assistance, but he departed from Siberia and thus benefited from the natural drift of the pack ice which operated in his favour.

Dave estimates that it will take him approximately 55 days to reach his destination (about 676 km). He is also aiming to beat the world record for speed over this route.

We should perhaps add that during his attempt, he will be aided by a colleague who will be sending him messages by telepathy at certain times determined in advance. The study, which is being conducted under the leadership of Dr Wiseman (researcher into the paranormal) will consist of sending the polar traveller - by telepathy, of course - images selected at random; Dave will then have to note down what goes through his mind at the time and write down his impressions, which he will then send off to his HQ.
Another person will read David's notes later and compare them with four postcards of the image - the real target and three decoys. The judge will not know which image was the real target and will have to decide which postcard comes the nearest to the notes sent at the time of the communication made by David. If he selects the correct target, the attempt will then be declared a success. He will have some 20 tests to carry out in this way during his trek; it only remains to be hoped that all this will not slow the walker down in his mad dash for the Pole !

This expedition is sponsored by The Cancer Research Campaign in the United Kingdom, an organisation that is at the cutting edge of developments into cancer research and which receives one third of the UK budget granted for the fight against this disease.
