The commercial adventures organised by ANI (Adventure Network International): Each year, this particular TO organises treks for the more adventurous of its clients, leaving from Hercules Island and heading for the South Pole (approximately 900 km). This year, there are three teams out there on the ice.

Curewalk : a group of 6 diabetics, who are attempting the route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole. The reason behind their trek is to make a greater number of people aware of the problems caused by this ancient disorder.

Expedicion Antarctica 2002 2003 : Expedicion Antarctica 2002 2003: 4 Chilean mountaineers will be attempting to cross the Sentinel Range in the Ellsworth Mountains while at the same time climbing three previously unconquered peaks of over 4 000 metres.

Kit Kat Ice Kites Expedition : A Briton and an Irishman are testing out a new type of polar vehicle - the "Parastorm Ski Buggy" (a buggy on skis pulled along by traction sails) - along the route between the South Pole and Patriot Hills, which they hope to achieve in a new record time...

Mission Banquise : French adventurer Jean-Louis Etienne is leaving from North Pole aboard a special vessel "Polar Observer". He plans to let himself drif together with the ice pack in order to make scientific observations along the route.

M&G Investments North Pole Expedition 2002 : three British women, Ann Daniels (37), Pom Oliver (50) et Caroline Hamilton (35) go for the route Ward Hunt -> NP. They have been at the SP already. Departure scheduled for March 10th.

North Pole 2002/Polar Orchid Challenge : British Ben Saunders (24) wants to be the youngest man ever to reach NP, solo and unassisted. He leaves from Arktichewski Cape. He had been on the pack ice already last year (with guide Pen Hadow) but failed.

Polar Ring : A long Arctic traverse (6000km) from Siberia to Resolute Bay, with special motorised vehicles under the lead of Vladimir Chukov. This expedition is part of a huge Russian project, Road to the third Millenium.

Shaochuang Liu : Chinese adventurer Liu Shaochuang is trying the route Cape Arktichewski - North Pole, solo and unsupported. He is leaving on March 01. We have not tkan any contatc with this team yet.

North East Passage aboard Vagabond : Frenchman Eric Brossier, together with 6 companions is following the same route as Swedish Explorer Adolf E. Nordenskjöld in 1878-79. Leaving in May and planning to reach Pacific Ocean in October.

The Poles Wearables Expedition 2001/02 : American pair Thomas and Tina Sjogren try to reach both South and North pole, one after the other. Unsupported. Aft having failed once, they succeeded this year, reaching SP on January 31st. Start : mid-April.

BANCROFT ARNESEN EXPEDITION : American Ann Bancroft (45) and Norwegian Liv Arnesen (47) plan to be the first women ever to achieve an entire crossing of Antarctica. They'll start from Blue One and head to South Pole, then go to McMurdo. With resupply.

NORWEGIAN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION : Team of four has wintered in a norwegian base (Troll) during 10 months. Two of them, Rolf Bae (25) and Eirik Sřnneland (same age), left Troll end October for a trek to South Pole. They use skis and powerkites.

POLE TO POLE 2000 : A great great adventure. A team of youngsters, coming from all over the world, is travelling from North to South Pole. FIVE OTHER SMALLER EXPEDITIONS : antarctica.org is also following the 5 other antarctic expeditions which are trekking from Patriot Hills to South Pole (1100 km). Amongst these, a blind man, Miles Hilton-Barber, who is raising founds for RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind).

SLOVENIAN SOLO : Slovenian skier Stane Klemenc (50) wants to attempt a solo traverse of 6th Continent. Blue One McMurdo. He will use powerkites being seated in a carbon-fibre, chair-like, device, specially designed for his expedition.

Arnaud Tortel and Rodolphe André, two Frenchmen, depart from Cape Arktikschevsky in Siberia for the Great Canadian North on 27 February. After three revictualling operations, they end in failure some 570 km from their goal, following a serious fall by Arnaud when crossing a pressure ridge.

Rune Gjeldnes and Torry Larsen depart from Severnaya Zemlya in Siberia on 16 February in an attempt to reach Ward Hunt via the North Pole. They arrived there on 03 June after 109 days spent on the ice cap and a trek of 1,914 km. This is the first unassisted Arctic crossing.

Haraldur Örn Ólafsson and Ingţór Bjarnason departed from the Great Canadian North to reach the North Pole. After 15 days, Bjarnason gave up, and the other went on solo. He reached the North Pole on 10 May after 65 days and a journey of 712 km.

Setting off from Resolute Bay on 09 April in the hope of being the first person to conquer the North Pole (from Canada) without external assistance, Dave Mill gave up on 24 May after 50 days of walking. He was short of fuel, food and batteries…

Antarctica 2000: Dixie Dansercoer returns to the Antarctic accompanied by his wife Julie Brown and the first Belgian conqueror of Everest, Rudy Van Snick. Objective: the summit of Mount Vinson and to get from Vinson to Patriot on foot.
